you could always tell him he was the great influence for you getting a bike. if he is really into bikes, it would at least partially convey that you respect him and his affect on you.

(sadly) that reminds me of a ‘king of the hill’ episode where hank is forced to work for Caan, his Asian neighbor, who thinks it is him who is making the business profitable, when it is actually hank busting his ass to do too much work for one man. but sadly, it is just about impossible to make your boss realize that you are the “golden goose” without either sounding egocentric, or by quitting, letting them realize the err of their ways…
